Ultrasonic debridement has become a vital tool in chronic wound treatment. Increasingly, mobile wound care providers employ this technology to support the healing process. While traditional wound care methods continue to play an important role, Atlanta physicians increasingly recognize the value of incorporating ultrasonic debridement into their treatment plans. Let’s examine the main benefits of ultrasonic debridement for chronic wounds.

What Are the Advantages of Ultrasonic Debridement for Wound Healing?

Ultrasonic debridement is a wound cleaning method that uses low-frequency ultrasound waves to remove dead or damaged tissue, bacteria and other harmful materials from wounds and ulcers. The following reasons demonstrate why these devices are valuable tools in modern wound care.

Precisely Removes Dead Tissue

Ultrasonic debridement targets nonviable tissue without causing damage to any healthy surrounding tissue. Unless this damaged tissue is removed, bacteria can become trapped in the wound and cause delays in healing. After removing dead tissue, physicians can evaluate the extent of the wound’s size and depth.

Prepares the Wound for Healing

Without the barrier of necrotic tissue, topical medications can penetrate more deeply. Removing dead skin cells and bacteria creates the optimal conditions for new tissue to grow. Cleaning the wound bed can prevent inflammation and swelling – a topic we discussed in our post on the signs you need professional wound care.

Reduces Bacteria and Risk of Infection

Bacteria forms biofilm (or protective layers) on the surface of a wound. Biofilm can potentially spread the infection to deeper tissues, and it prevents antibiotics and other treatments from working as effectively. Ultrasonic debridement reduces this bacterial build-up to improve conditions for healing.

Less Bleeding Than Alternative Treatments

Ultrasonic debridement results in less bleeding than surgical alternatives, as it precisely targets dead tissue. This approach causes minimal damage to blood vessels and reduces the chance of excessive bleeding.

Ultrasonic Debridement Studies Show Promising Results

A meta-analysis in the International Wound Journal identified that for diabetic foot ulcers, ultrasonic debridement had better healing rates after three months than surgical debridement. Following an ultrasonic procedure there was an average of 17% greater wound area reduction. Similarly, venous leg ulcers had 19% more wound area reduction using ultrasonic treatment in comparison with sham treatments. (A “sham treatment” functions as a placebo, as the procedure itself is not actually performed.)

Suitable for Various Types of Wounds

Mobile ultrasonic debridement is effective in healing various types of chronic wounds that can prove difficult to treat. This procedure is commonly used for diabetic foot ulcers, bed sores, venous ulcers and other chronic wounds. When combined with a personalized wound care plan and ongoing treatment, patients can experience a more comfortable healing process without complications.
